Coach Travis's Pickleball Tips

  1. Arrive With A Clear Goal

Before your first pickleball lesson, choose one challenge you want to address, such as serve consistency or confidence at the kitchen line. Tell me your experience level, what you enjoy, and what feels difficult. That gives me a useful starting point and helps me shape the session around you. Bring a paddle, water, and questions; you do not need to arrive with a perfect game.

  2. Choose The Right Lesson

Private pickleball lessons give you focused, individual feedback and a plan built around your needs. Semi-private pickleball lessons let you learn with a partner while still getting coaching attention. Group pickleball lessons add shared drills and game situations. In Lake Forest, I can help you choose the format that fits your goals, comfort level, and preferred way to learn.

  3. Build A Simple Practice Plan

Between sessions, keep practice short and specific instead of trying to fix everything at once. Pick one skill from your lesson, such as a third-shot drop, and repeat it with a clear target. Use a few focused blocks, pause to reset, and finish with a game-like drill. This routine helps your body remember the lesson and gives our next session a useful starting point.

  4. Set Goals You Can Measure

A realistic goal describes an action you can control, not a match result. For example, aim to make seven of ten serves land deep during practice, or use a ready position before each return. Your pickleball coach can help set a baseline and adjust the target as you improve. Small, measurable steps keep progress visible without turning every session into a test.

  5. Track Progress After Lessons

After each lesson, write down one cue that helped, one drill to repeat, and one question for next time. Note a simple measure, such as successful serves out of ten or controlled volleys in a row. These details make improvement easier to see, even when it feels gradual. I can use your notes to connect each session and keep your practice focused.

  6. Match Coaching To Your Stage

Beginner pickleball lessons can build grips, scoring, serves, and court positioning from the ground up. Kids pickleball lessons and junior pickleball lessons should keep instruction active, clear, and age-appropriate. Adult pickleball lessons can focus on fundamentals, strategy, or sharpening an established game. Share your experience and priorities so your pickleball instructor can tailor drills to your stage.

  7. Make Every Drill Count

Do not just collect repetitions; give each drill a purpose. Before you start, name the skill, choose a target, and decide what good contact should feel like. If your form slips, slow down or shorten the drill rather than practicing the mistake. Ask me for one correction at a time, then repeat the movement until you can carry it into a rally.

  8. Use Hitting Sessions Wisely

Hitting only sessions are a good fit when you want more rally time and repetition without a full lesson structure. Bring one focus, such as keeping crosscourt dinks low, and tell me what feedback you want. I can help maintain a steady feed and point out patterns as we hit. If you need a new technique or detailed corrections, choose a coached lesson instead.

  9. Review And Adjust Your Goals

Every few sessions, look back at your notes and compare your current practice with your starting point. Notice what feels more reliable, where you still hesitate, and which drills transfer into games. Then update one goal rather than replacing your whole plan. Consistent pickleball lessons in Lake Forest can build lasting habits when each next step reflects what you have actually learned.

  10. Coach's Corner

I teach a calm kitchen-line reset: soften your grip, get your paddle in front, and bend your knees before the ball arrives. When a fast shot comes at you, block it with a short motion instead of swinging hard. Aim low over the net and toward the middle to reduce angles. Practice ten controlled blocks, then try the same choice during a cooperative rally.

Whether you are new to the game or ready to sharpen specific skills, I can help you turn a clear goal into a practical lesson and practice plan. I’m Travis, a pickleball instructor in Lake Forest, and I offer private, semi-private, group, and hitting only sessions for different needs and learning styles. FindPickleballLessons.com is a place to connect with me and book your next step. Let’s build your game together!
